Ανήμερα του Άη Λιά - On Saint Elias Day

My Greek poems! English version below. ↓↓

Ποιος ξέρει τώρα πού να βρει το εκκλησάκι ετούτο;

χαραγμένα στον ραγισμένο τοίχο;

θα στέκουν μάρτυρες αδιάψευστοι της προδοσίας;

On Saint Elias Day

Climbing the pass of Agios Pavlos,

toward Aetofolia,

perched on the eastern slope

of the Pentadactylos range

there, the church of Prophet Elias,

long ruined and silent.

On its blackened walls,

the names of soldiers,

carved crudely with a knife,

struggle now with eternity.

Some were etched years ago,

and some, just moments before

the back door opened.

On Saint Elias Day, July 20th,

as they sought to light a candle

for the Saint's grace,

hot enemy lead tore through their chests,

leaving their lifeless bodies to the predators.

Only a faint trace of their name remains.

In the shade of the cypresses below,

a chain of bullets and a storm lamp

rust upon the bloody earth.

A concrete building marks

the Assembly Point of those betrayed lads.

The 231st Infantry Battalion's (IB) relief still stands.

Fifty-one years have passed.

Who now knows where to find this ruin?

Who remembers the names of soldiers

engraved on that cracked wall?

Time passes; memory fades.

For how much longer will the bullets and the lamp

remain indisputable witnesses of the betrayal?

  2. On July 20th, a candle is lit in honor of Saint Elias. Those who fought in the infantry where there was consecration fought for a just cause of recognizing their beliefs and rights.

  3. Lovely poem - July 20 - the feast day of Saint Elias, the turkish invasion of Cyprus. Remembering those people of Cyprus who dies during war. Remembering the loved ones that they all lost too soon. Remembering those who never came home. And to those who made ultimate sacrifices, and the families that live with their loss.
