Στοιχειωμένη πολιτεία: Αμμόχωστος

Δρόμοι φραγμένοι, χορταριασμένοι

σπίτια ρωγμές γεμάτα, ακατοίκητα.

Φίδια, νυφίτσες, συντροφιά σου

Πόλη άλλοτε μυροβολούσα.


Οι άνθρωποι που ανάθρεψες

φοβισμένοι σ’ εγκατέλειψαν.

Μα εσύ βουβή κι’ ανήμπορη

 ακόμα τους προσμένεις.

Haunted City: Famagusta

Blockaded roads, and weedy streets

Where houses crack, and no one greets.

Your only friends, the snake and rat,

An orange-scented city of the past.

 

The people that you nurtured well

Were driven out by fear's harsh spell;

Yet you remain, silent and meek,

Still waiting for the ones you seek.

In a village of eighty stone houses and four hundred and fifty souls, the construction of the Church of Saint Modestos had brought an unprecedented buzz. However, the true "kingdom" of the day was not found inside the temple, but right next to it: on the old threshing floor, which had been meticulously cleared of manure to welcome the youth. There, far from the solemnity of the elders who watched with "crooked" (judgmental) eyes from the coffee shop, the teenagers had staged their own revolution. Christmas Story!

Christmas Eve Night! A heavy Christmas Eve hung over the world. Outside, the cold cut like a knife through an eerie frost. Inside, the house was equally glacial—a silent freeze that seemed to have sucked all the warmth out of the hearth. An old woman sat alone in her carved wooden rocking chair by the window of the frost-rimed room. She held a family photograph, yellowed by time, clutched in her hands with a sacred intensity. A threadbare, tattered blanket struggled to keep even a flickering warmth within her frail, withered body. Beside her, a lamp blackened by soot and low on oil cast only a faint, yellowish whisper of light into the dense shadows. The old woman gazed with a vacant, unfocused look out the window, her head nodding rhythmically to the motion of the chair. It moved like a steady pendulum, carrying her thoughts far away, beyond the seas and the mountains. Her weary spirit abandoned her tired body and flew to foreign lands to find her only son, whom she had not seen...
