Leave the ego behind, for we are not alone!

(Late-night thoughts)

We are born bearing the "ego" as a silent, inseparable dowry along the path of our existence. We find ourselves wandering through vast human crowds, and yet we march forward with the eyes of our soul hermetically sealed, unable to behold, to listen closely to, or to taste the essence of another. We live under the illusion of absolute uniqueness, only to taste at the twilight of life the most freezing, true solitude.

We grow up claiming recognition upon the crutches of others, only to exclaim with arrogance that we achieved everything all by ourselves. And then, we mumble complaints that fate was harsh, that no one ever extended a helping hand. We climbed the paths of life by tearing others down, diminishing their worth to elevate our own stature—proving nothing more than emptiness to our own reflection. We wounded people through underhanded ways, we drove daggers into the back of trust, exclusively to nourish this voracious, trivial "ego."

Seasons have passed, we have gathered knowledge, and clothed ourselves in the robes of experience. We have grown old convinced that we wear the halo of wisdom, and yet, the steering wheel of the soul is still held by that same blind, merciless "ego." We continue to walk as captives to an invisible inner tyrant, refusing to grant ourselves the redeeming gift of the "we."

The oil in the lamp of our life is growing dangerously scarce, and with it, the flame of life itself is fading. And yet, we stand on the same riverbank, carrying the exact same uncontainable arrogance we had in our very first steps. How many funerals have our eyes not witnessed? How many lifeless bodies have been led to the earth, utterly alone, incapable of carrying even a fraction of the treasures of a whole lifetime? And if anything manages to remain behind, it will be left to the oblivion of the grave, waiting for strangers, distant descendants to find it centuries later.

And yet... the wind blows, but the lesson does not take root. We continue to fear contemplating the undeniable: that we were never truly alone in this world, and that without others, our existence is nothing more than a shadowy reflection in the void.

  1. Beautifully said. What a beautiful reminder that we belong to each other. Letting go of ego is how we find each other. Thank you for this❤️
