Ήταν Δεκαπεντάουστος - The Fifteenth of August 1974

My Greek poems! English version below. ↓↓

The Fifteenth of August

My friends, come close, pay attention right away,

I've got a story for you I must convey.

It was the Fifteenth of August, just as darkness fell,

when the Turks marched into Varosha's citadel.

Some screamed, "Flee, the Turkish army is near,"

others had darker motives, driven by ill cheer.

Mothers, babies, the aged, with sorrow and fright,

abandoned their homes upon hearing the terrible plight.

Everyone fled then, even the troops had to leave,

betrayed by the leaders, the traitors, in whom they believed.

They ran with bare feet and their hair all unbound,

with tears in their eyes and their poor hearts burned to the ground.

The cars were all crammed, on roads leading to doom,

and people walked, desperate to escape the gloom.

They didn't grab valuables or treasures to keep,

just bread for the babies before they could sleep.

Some cursed the wicked who had brought forth the deed,

while others vowed solemn prayers, planting a sacred seed.

That Christ would save them from that brutal, awful stage,

and they'd light a great candle to the Virgin on the sacred page.

Under carob trees and within flimsy tents they hid fast,

the rich and the poor, together, their fortune now cast.

This is what hatred and our internal divide have created,

refugees in our own country, for fifty years fated.

At first, our old hatreds and passions we cast aside,

but the time passed too quickly, and mistakes we couldn't hide.

My God, shine a light so our minds may comprehend,

to drop our own egos and see a better end.

I wish all the refugees could finally return,

and see Cyprus free, for as long as I burn.

Thank you, dear friends, for staying and lending your ear,

to this story of sorrow that poured from my heart here.
