Ο Τρύγος!

Βάρτε ομπρός ν’ αρκέψουμεν, τον τρύον εις τα’ αμπέλιν

να κάμουμέν τον ππαλουζέν, τζιαι έψημαν πον’ μέλιν

να κάμουμέν τζιαι το κρασίν, μα τζιαι κουμανταρίαν

στο τέλος ν’ αποστάξουμεν, τζιαι λλίην ζιβανίαν

 

Με το ζουμίν του σταφυλιού, κάμνουν τζιαι το κκιοφτέριν

τζιαι τον σουτζιούκκον κάμνουν τον, με μούστον τζιαι αλεύριν

με το σταφύλιν φίλοι μου, κάμνουν τζιαι την σταφίαν

που εν πολλά καλός μεζές, με λλίην ζιβανίαν

 

Με τούτα ούλλα τα καλά, που έσιει το σταφύλιν

φκάλλουμεν τον σιειμώναν μας, οι συγγενείς τζιοι φίλοι

πίννουμεν που καμιάν κρασιάν, τζιαι λλίην ζιβανίαν

τζιαι έχουμεν για τσίλλιμαν, κκιοφτέριν τζιαι σταφίαν

 

Πιάστε κοφίνια τζιαι ψαλλίν, τζι’ αρκέψετε τον τρύον

για νά’ χουμεν να πίννουμεν, πιχάρκου που νναν κρύον

λλίον κρασίν εν φάρμακον, καλόν για την καρκιάν σας

να ζήσετε γρόνια πολλά, τζι’ εσείς τζιαι τα παικιά σας

The Harvest

Let's begin the work, the vineyard's prime

to make the “Palouze” in good time;

We'll make our wine, and “Commandaria” so sweet

and distill a clear drop of “Zivania” to heat.

 

From the juice of the grapes comes the “Kkiofteri” light

and “Soutzoukko” is made with must and flour so bright;

With these good grapes, my friends, we'll make raisins so fine

a perfect little appetizer, with a sip of “Zivania's” shine.

 

With all these gifts the fruitful vineyard brings

our winter we'll endure with all our kin's;

We'll drink the warmth of wine and clear “Zivania's” cheer

with “Kkiofteri” and raisins held closely near.

 

Grab the baskets and the scissors, let the harvest start

so we'll have drinks ready for the cold to impart;

A little wine is medicine, good for the beating heart

may you and your children live a joyful life apart.

Christmas Story!

Christmas Eve Night! A heavy Christmas Eve hung over the world. Outside, the cold cut like a knife through an eerie frost. Inside, the house was equally glacial—a silent freeze that seemed to have sucked all the warmth out of the hearth. An old woman sat alone in her carved wooden rocking chair by the window of the frost-rimed room. She held a family photograph, yellowed by time, clutched in her hands with a sacred intensity. A threadbare, tattered blanket struggled to keep even a flickering warmth within her frail, withered body. Beside her, a lamp blackened by soot and low on oil cast only a faint, yellowish whisper of light into the dense shadows. The old woman gazed with a vacant, unfocused look out the window, her head nodding rhythmically to the motion of the chair. It moved like a steady pendulum, carrying her thoughts far away, beyond the seas and the mountains.
