Όσο περίμενα
Τα
μαραμένα πορτοκάλια στα κρικέλια
θύμιζαν
γιορτή πορτοκαλιού
μα
δεν ήταν.
Τα
ζαρωμένα, άνυδρα πορτοκάλια
πρόδιδαν
της ψυχής τον μαρασμό.
Ξερά,
στεγνά και διψασμένα,
σε γιορτή
με φόντο το Βαρώσι.
Σπαράζει
στη θέα τους η ψυχή του περβολάρη.
Ξεράθηκε
κι η τελευταία νεραντζιά,
δεν
έχει ίσκιο να ξαποστάσει
ο
αποσταμένος περβολάρης.
Γλυφό
το νερό
να
ξεδιψάσει την κουρασμένη ψυχή του.
Γερνάμε,
ξεχνάμε και τότε πώς θα πάμε;
Κρατάτε!
Η
διψασμένη γη σας καρτερεί,
όπως
και τα κουρσεμένα σπίτια.
Μονοιάστε.

While I was waiting
The withered oranges on
the grapnels
reminded me of the
Orange’s Feast.
But it was no feast.
The wrinkled fruit on
the hooks
uncovered a withered
soul.
Wilted oranges at a
feast,
just outside Famagusta.
The soul of the farmers
aches
to see the thirsty,
fainting fruit.
The orange trees are
dry,
no shade remains for the
tired farmer.
The water is salty,
it cannot quench the
farmers’ thirsty soul.
We are getting old and
we forget:
How shall we return?
Hold on! Your dried
farms deserve you,
as do your looted homes.
Stick together. Be
united.
