Ένας τοίχος θυμάται

Του γιασεμιού ολάνθιστο κλαρί σαν χέρι τείνει

μέσα απ’ το σκουριασμένο συρματόπλεγμα

τα μοσχομυρισμένα λούλουδα να δώσει!

Πίσω από τον φράκτη,

του κουρσεμένου σπιτιού ο ραγισμένος τοίχος

γοερά διηγείται κατορθώματα του παρελθόντος.

Μπροστά από τον φράκτη,

η Θλίψη και ο Πόνος καταρρακώνουν του διαβάτη

την αιμάσσουσα ψυχή.

Stories written on walls

The fully blossomed jasmine bough like a hand reaches,

through the rusted wire mesh barrier,

to offer up its fragrant, sweet-scented blooms!

Behind the fence,

the cracked wall of the plundered house

mournfully recounts the glories of the past.

Before the fence,

Grief and Pain overwhelm the passerby's

bleeding soul.

Christmas Eve Night! A heavy Christmas Eve hung over the world. Outside, the cold cut like a knife through an eerie frost. Inside, the house was equally glacial—a silent freeze that seemed to have sucked all the warmth out of the hearth. An old woman sat alone in her carved wooden rocking chair by the window of the frost-rimed room. She held a family photograph, yellowed by time, clutched in her hands with a sacred intensity. A threadbare, tattered blanket struggled to keep even a flickering warmth within her frail, withered body. Beside her, a lamp blackened by soot and low on oil cast only a faint, yellowish whisper of light into the dense shadows. The old woman gazed with a vacant, unfocused look out the window, her head nodding rhythmically to the motion of the chair. It moved like a steady pendulum, carrying her thoughts far away, beyond the seas and the mountains.
