Καντάρα 1570 - Kantara 1570

My Greek poems! English version below.

Kantara 1570

On Kantara's high mountain, where the old castle stands,

a white horse carried the queen through the lands.

She climbed to her tower, to gaze at the sight,

and counted her ships sailing, all clear and bright.

They carried their sacks filled with riches of gold,

to Venice, a story that must now be told.

Returning, their holds were quite empty and bare,

but the ships were seen by the Turks lurking there.

From the north, they watched the rich vessels that passed,

with jealousy's fire, their hatred held fast.

They launched an attack for the wealth of the isle,

their goal was to seize it with cunning and guile.

The Venetians resisted, they stood strong and brave,

they fought for ten months to conquer and save.

But when all the food was completely all gone,

and nothing was left to survive or live on,

They chose to seek mercy from the powerful Turk,

to see if their lives could be saved from the work.

They handed the keys to Mustafa the bold,

And Selim took Cyprus, a story of old.
